Inspired by Lower East Side History Month and my research into the landmark jazz club the Five Spot, this was a rare exploration of the scene from Coleman's 1959 NYC debut through today -- capped by a spirited performance by the New School's Ornette Coleman Ensemble, directed by Grammy-winning saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom.

Based on my research and writing about the possibility of preserving NYC's landmark bars, restaurants, and food shops, panelists including  Columbia University planning professor Stacey Sutton, landlord/developer Robert Perl, and Eater critic Robert Sietsema (wearing a devil mask so that restaurateurs don't recognize him), debated the fate of these beloved places.  (See the Small Business Preservation page for more.)
